Separation of powers
The Constitution creates three separate branches of government, each with different responsibilities and constitutional authority to check and balance the other branches. This prevents any one person or group from abusing their power.

Enumerated powers
The Constitution lists the powers that the government has, and the government can’t assume any powers that aren’t explicitly granted to it. For example, the Tenth Amendment states that powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution are reserved for the states or the people.
